A redesign is the easiest way to lose search traffic you spent years earning. This is the checklist we run before and after every relaunch.

Before launch

  • Crawl the old site and export every URL that has traffic or backlinks.
  • Build a one-to-one redirect map to the new URLs. Avoid sending everything to the home page.
  • Check canonicals, hreflang and noindex tags on staging — then remove the staging noindex before launch.
  • Add structured data for organisation, services, articles and FAQs.

After launch

  • Submit the new sitemap and watch coverage in Search Console daily for two weeks.
  • Crawl again and fix any redirect chains or 404s.
  • Compare Core Web Vitals and rankings for your top pages against the old site.
